History of NAPIER

The Napier Jewelry Company can trace its origins back to 1875 in Attleboro, Massachusetts. Known originally as Whitney and Rice, the company specialized in silver products rather than jewelry. After the end of the first World War I, the company shifted focus from silver products to jewelry. James Napier took over the helm of the company in 1920 and changed the name of the company to Napier Jewelry in 1922. Known for costume jewelry that was elegant in design, the company continued to prosper throughout the 20th century.

There was a time when the fashion industry was all about Napier jewellery. It was considered one of the most famous costume jewellery brands as their designs were simple, sleek, and fashion-forward. The famous movie stars like Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelley, Arlene Francie, Lana Turner and even the Duchess of Windsor wore bracelets, earrings, and necklaces made by Napier jewellery.

Even though most of their designs were gold-plated, they did make a few pieces from real gold. The Napier Company made 14k gold pieces as a limited edition during 1950-1960.

Much of Napier’s jewelry was considered avant-garde at the time. All of its designers were artists first. And they had complete freedom to design what they wanted before they presented it to the team. The designers weren’t instructed to create within a particular genre, and that’s why Napier had so many different looks.
